Do you come out as far as Woodside?

Is it worth relining a drain out here rather than digging it up?

Often, yes. Can you find a leak in a buried poly line across a paddock?

Yes, and it is regular work out here. The method is to isolate the system into sections and test them under pressure in turn, using the meter as the indicator, so the loss is narrowed to the run between 2 isolation points. Where a long line has no valve to split it, we fit one and split it there. That way the excavator opens the section that failed rather than the whole run, though we will be straight with you that this gets you to a length of pipe, not to a mark on the grass. Old poly joins and repairs made in a hurry are where these leaks usually turn up.

Our hot water runs out halfway through the second shower. Does that mean a new system?

Not necessarily. A storage unit that has quietly lost capacity is usually losing it to 1 of 3 things: sediment sitting in the bottom of the cylinder, a failed element or thermostat so only part of the cylinder is being heated, or a tempering valve that has drifted and is mixing through more cold than it should. Any of those can be corrected on a unit that is otherwise sound. Season matters too, because valley mornings start with colder inlet water, so a unit that was already marginal for the household will show it in July and cope in January. Where the cylinder is genuinely at the end of its life or the sacrificial anode went years ago, replacement is the honest answer, and that is the point to have a proper sizing conversation rather than swap like for like out of habit.
